Music is...

the dance of the soul; the harmony of lovers. Music enhances the wedding ceremony, and sets the whole tone for the reception. Music selections for your wedding may be different than what you select for the reception, but both selections should be a personal reflection and celebration of the bride and groom and the merging of their two lives together.

The Wedding:
Your music selections should compliment your wedding, and be free-flowing throughout the ceremony. Deciding on the type of wedding you will have is essential before you can consider your music selections. Also, if you are having a church wedding, you must discuss the church regulations regarding the type and style of music they will allow before any other decisions are made.

Formal weddings are traditionally held in churches and the music usually ranges from organ music to a vocalist accompanied by a  guitar, organ, or piano. During the ceremony there are approximately six opportunities for musical selections to be played during the wedding:

  • While the guests are being seated
  • After the bride's mother is seated
  • As the wedding party and bride walk to the altar
  • Following the vow recitals
  • After you have been announced as husband and wife by the clergy
  • As the guests are ushered out of the church

Informal weddings are as unique as the bride and groom themselves, and are usually a personalized reflection of the new couple. The only concerns you may come across when deciding on musical selections for an informal wedding is environmental. Many weddings of this nature are held outside and this may limit some musical options due to equipment restrictions.

The Reception:
Whether you're a rocker or an oldies lover, music sets the tone for the whole reception and there are a variety of entertainment options to consider. If your wedding is an elegant, extremely formal affair, an orchestra playing softly throughout the evening might be the perfect atmosphere enhancement. On the other hand, if you're ready to PARTY, a Disc Jockey or live band might be more your style.

After you have selected the type of musical entertainment, you will need to check with the reception facility to ensure it is able to accommodate your musical choices. For instance, if you have chosen a live band or DJ you may have to get permission to bring in additional lighting or electrical equipment. The disc jockey or band plays an integral role at the reception, in fact it is usually their responsibility to keep the events continuing smoothly throughout the evening such as announcing your (the bride and groom) arrival, the first dance, the bouquet toss, etc. Not to mention have the personality to engage your guests into participating and enjoying your reception.
